Why is an oil change necessary?

Oil changes play a key role in maintaining the health and lifespan of your vehicle’s engine. Any automobile with an internal combustion engine requires routine oil changes, as the fresh lubricant helps with internal cooling and prevents damage that could result from metal-on-metal contact of parts like valves and pistons. While all engines need oil changes, the type of oil and frequency your car requires may vary based on several factors including the mileage and age of your vehicle.

How often should I get my car’s oil changed?

You should consider getting an oil change every 5,000 milesor so, though this will vary depending on your car’s specific requirements as well as your driving habits and local road conditions. Refer to the factory-recommended intervals in your owner’s manual for details or give us a call with any further questions.

How can I check my vehicle’s oil?

Checking your oil is easy. First, allow the engine ample time to cool down after use. Once the engine has cooled, raise the hood and carefully extract what’s known as the dipstick from its tube -- if you’re not familiar with the dipstick, you’ll find it's usually marked by an oil symbol that helps make it easy to spot.

The bottom of the dipstick features a small, crosshatched section that indicates where exactly oil levels should be. The oil level should fall within the crosshatched area. If the dipstick is dry, add oil immediately, then check the level again. Repeat until the dipstick indicates sufficient oil levels.

You can also use this opportunity to check the color and consistency of the oil. If you find that the appearance of the engine oil is darker than an amber shade or has a thick, sludge-like consistency, immediately schedule an oil change.

Is my car showing signs of an oil leak?

To identify whether your car is leaking, check underneath it for fresh signs of oil stains or puddles. Other indicators of an oil leak could include engine smoke, blue exhaust smoke, or if the dashboard’s oil light gets activated. There are numerous ways in which vehicles may leak oil, so it's always safest to have our certified Toyota service technicians investigate the matter further.
